The Indian Cricket Board have confirmed that the UAE is going to host this year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) in Dubai this September.
The IPL is one of the largest cricketing events in the world and of the biggest sporting events with a TV audience of billions.
The original event was postponed in March due to the Coronavirus pandemic. And with India experiencing a nationwide surge in infections, they’ve had to look for other venues to host the event.
According to IPL governing council chairman Brijesh Patel, “The clincher for us was that the UAE has a great infra-structure there – from the venues to the practice facilities. There is a wide selection of hotels and most importantly, they know our expectations as they have hosted the event once in 2014,’’ he said.
And the UAE is a natural choice with strong transport connections and several excellent cricket grounds.
The T20 league is a hugely lucrative one worth nearly half a billion dollars in TV revenue, tickets and advertising. It’s due to run in the UAE from September 26 until November 7. And, as ever, it’s set to feature most of the world’s best cricketers.
